Project Snapshot:

Location: Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth
Building type: Landmark visitor attraction
Service delivered: Glass floor replacement
Access method: IRATA glazing team, MFC 750 Mini Floor Crane and Wood’s Powr-Grip P11104
Project type: Planned remedial glazing works, out of hours to minimise disruption

The Brief:

Dynamic Access was engaged to deliver a specialist glass floor replacement at Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, with support from Pendrich Height Services. The agreed scope included task-specific RAMS, provision of an IRATA glazing team, removal and disposal of the defective units, installation of four replacement units and full cordoning to the working area.

The Challenge:

Replacing structural glass within a public attraction requires a disciplined approach to both safety and specification. Each replacement unit weighed 277kg and formed part of a glass floor assembly, meaning the lifting operation, handling sequence and installation tolerances all had to be tightly controlled.

The programme also had to be delivered out of hours, with the area closed to the public, to allow the works to proceed safely and without operational disruption. The replacement units also had to be carefully specified in line with the on-site O&M information and existing glazing specification, ensuring compatibility with the original build-up and the performance requirements of the installation.

Our Solution:

Dynamic Access delivered the glazing package using an experienced IRATA glazing team and a specialist lifting arrangement suited to the confined working environment. The replacement sequence was carried out using an MFC 750 Mini Floor Crane in conjunction with a Wood’s Powr-Grip P11104, allowing each unit to be handled in a controlled manner during both removal and reinstallation.

With support from Pendrich Height Services, the works were planned around a single out-of-hours possession, with access, lifting, cordoning and installation methodology coordinated in advance. The four replacement units were specified to align with the relevant O&M information and existing glazing requirements, ensuring the finished installation was appropriate for the application rather than simply matching size alone.

The Outcome:

All four defective glass floor units were successfully removed and replaced during the planned night shift, restoring the affected area while the structure remained closed to the public. The project demonstrates Dynamic Access’ capability to deliver specialist glazing replacement packages on complex, high-profile structures, combining technical glazing knowledge with controlled lifting methodology and disciplined out-of-hours delivery.
